Student Police Academy 2010 Graduation

Delta Police Celebrating the 6th Student Academy Class

Chief Cessford inspects Class 6Several months ago grade 11and 12 students were asked to submit applications to their School Liaison Officers to participate in a DPD Student Police Academy. The applicants then went through a selection process to identify the best candidates to participate in the week long camp that commenced July 05 and concluded on July 13, 2010.

On July 13 2010 sixteen young men and four young women also known as “Class 6” stood a little taller with a little more pride and appreciation having successfully completed this rigorous camp. The week long camp included Drill, Firearms/Driver training/Physical Fitness/Legal Studies/Control Tactics and Operational Scenarios.

The class valedictorian, Jelisa Massoud concluded her speech stating what the class had learned, “…..most importantly, your team is your team, you train together, you sweat together, you suffer together and you win together. Thank you guys for being an awesome team and thank you so much constables for giving us an experience we will never forget.” Although this particular youth initiative is driven by the School Liaison and Recruiting Sections of the Delta Police Department there were several police officers involved in delivering the Student Academy training.

After having inspected the Academy Students, Chief Cessford stated in his speech that, “This is an excellent program and allows young people a glimpse of what our officers experience in training and in their day to day duties. . I am proud of the hard work that our officers put into not only this program but other youth initiatives. I also appreciate the effort of each student during this challenging week. I look forward to seeing some of them graduating from the Justice Institute as Delta Police Recruits.”

The students learned that police-work is a team-effort focused on turning individual skills into collective ability. Overall, the graduates of the Student’s Police Academy were thrilled by the new experiences they were exposed to, thankful for the opportunity to sample policing as a career, happy to have made new friends, and anxious to explore further the possibilities of becoming a member of the Delta Police Department.
