Delta Police initiate “Animal Assisted Intervention K9 Program

Delta Police Department British Columbia BCSgt. Sharlene Brooks - Delta Police initiate “Animal Assisted Intervention K9 Program, a first of its kind in Canada having partnered with Pacific Assistance Dog Society (PADS).

The Delta Police Victim Services Section welcome their new K-9 addition into the section to offer a new approach to lending support and re-assurance to those impacted by crime and trauma.

The 2 yr old yellow Lab will commence training with Delta Police Victim services coordinators on July 26, 2010. The days and weeks that follow will serve as an assessment and transition period to confirm that this K-9 and the handlers work well together and that the dog adapts to the environment and the role he is to fulfill. At the conclusion of this assessment period, our new four legged member will report for duty to Delta Police Headquarters daily with his primary handler, Victim Services Coordinator, Kim Gramlich and will be available to respond to calls for service.

This furry friend will be deployed to various situations to; help calm those who are excessively upset and act as a bridge to communication with people who have difficulty communicating such as children and those with disabilities.

P.A.D.S, established in 1987, is a registered non-profit and recognized charity that breeds, raises, trains and places service, hearing and therapy dogs with persons who have a disability other than blindness. P.A.D.S is also accredited by the Assistance Dogs International.

The Delta Police are welcoming this opportunity to partner with P.A.D.S incorporating this unique approach to better serve our community.

Please Note: In keeping with the PADS criteria, the Delta Police are not able to release the name of the new k9 until the training and transition period has
successfully concluded.
