Divided Heaven (1964 -- German) Based on Christa Wolf's internationally acclaimed novel and criticized in the GDR (East Germany) for questioning the construction of the Wall, "Divided Heaven" was made during a brief cultural thaw in the early 1960s. Strongly influenced by French Nouvelle Vague cinema, this classic film directed by the legendary Konrad Wolf was praised by critics as one of Germany's 100 most important films. Mary and Max (2009) Voices of Toni Collette, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Eric Bana, Barry Humphries, Bethany Whitmore. Writer-director Adam Elliot brings the unique stop-motion style he forged in his Academy Award-winning short "Harvie Krumpet" to a feature about the unlikeliest of friendships. In 1970s suburban Melbourne, lonely 8-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle, the only child of an alcoholic mother and a distant father, picks a name at random out of a Manhattan phone book and writes to him. The recipient is Max Jerry Horovitz, an obese 44-year-old single man who, despite suffering from Asperger's syndrome, responds in kind. Thus begins a strange yet mutually supportive -- and at times strained -- pen-pal relationship that spans 20 years and two continents and touches on issues and concerns ranging from autism and alcoholism to taxidermy, kleptomania, religion, agoraphobia and where babies corne from. Max & Ruby: A Visit with Grandma (2010) Four new episodes of the Nick series, in which Max & Ruby go on an awesome treasure hunt, make "mudpies" and perform their very own recital in the backyard. The animated comedy series is based on the children's books by Rosemary Wells, and each episode centers on Max, a determined 3-year-old bunny, and his big sister, Ruby, a smart, goal-oriented 7-year-old. The show offers an empowering message for children by showing Max and Ruby playing together and resolving their differences in ways that are respectful and supportive. $16.99. (Paramount).

Mystery Train (1989) Dir.: Jim Jarmusch; Masatoshi Nagase, Youki Kudoh, Nicoletta Braschi, Elizabeth Bracco, Joe Strummer, Rick Aviles, Steve Buscemi, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Royale Johnson, Winston Hoffman. What Would Elvis Do? Question 1

I recently asked readers to send in their questions so I could answer them without any bias or double speak. Just clear answers to whatever is on your mind. That way when your having troubles forming an opinion you can always ask, "What Would Elvis Do?"



The first questions I received was actually a two-parter. So for my inaugural question I'm doing double duty.

I have received my Ipsos Reid survey regarding the Tsawwassen Area Plan in the mail and I know that I am going to choose 'Option A' because I don't wish to see any destruction of farmland. That was an easy choice to make with the way developers run roughshod over this city's council. When I Imagine Southlands I think of it in much the same way as it is now, with perhaps a little more farming. My question doesn't concern this portion of the survey. In fact, my question isn't a question at all as I have two questions.

My first question is:

Should we allow large residential lots to be subdivided?

and my second question is:

What do you think building heights should be in the town core?

These are great questions. Probably better than the Southlands dilemna because it's not so black and white.

Should we allow large residential lots to be subdivided?

In a word, yes. Tsawwassen is surrounded by water, agricultural land, and an international border. If we discount development on agricultural land (something I would do if I were the master of the universe) we need to make room for the controlled growth that Tsawwassen will require over the next 25 years. Retrofitting current neighbourhoods is a great way of bringing in new blood to the community without the devastating effects of mass development. The different developeprs would also bring in different styles of homes which adds to the flavour of the community.

What do you think building heights should be in the town core?

This question is tougher in that it doesn't deal with the development on questionable lands. Limits on building heights, particularly high-rises, effects the aesthetics of the town center. I personally wouldn't like to see a high-rise in the town center but I can understand the desire to have one. Higher densities would be achieved in a very small footprint. Residents would have great pedestrian access to local amenities and the view from higher suites would be second to none. My objection is that a high-rise changes Tsawwassen into an urban center and I would like to preserve the rural aesthetic. On my survey I have chosen to keep the height limits as is but it would be hard for me to oppose changing the limits if it meant preserving the Southlands and the rest of the agricultural land in Delta.

Tales of the Gold Monkey: The Complete Series (1982-83) Six-disc collector's box set with all 20 action-packed episodes of the TV series that became a hit following the success of the Indiana Jones films: Set in 1938, the adventure series chronicled a young American adventurer and his ragtag group of friends as they become involved in death-defying hi-jinx, transporting people-on-the-run in a well-worn Grumman Goose seaplane. Toe to Toe (2009) Louisa Krause, Sonequa Martin. The story of the friendship and rivalry between lacrosse mates Tosha and Jesse, two senior girls at a competitive Washington, D.C. prep school with different backgrounds: Tosha is a black scholarship student from Anacostia, one of Washington's poorest areas, while Jesse is a troubled and promiscuous white girl from the ritzy suburbs of Maryland. The two forge a close and genuine bond on the field, but their friendship unravels as they navigate through race and class related obstacles. When Jesse and Tosha discover that they've both been dating the same boy, the conflict becomes explosive. (Strand Releasing).

Word Is Out (2009) "Word Is Out" debuted in 1977 as the first feature-length documentary about lesbian and gay identity made by gay filmmakers (The Mariposa Film Group). After conducting 140 interviews, the filmmakers selected 26 people of various lifestyles, races, ages and backgrounds. What they achieved was a cornerstone in Gay Rights. The film quickly became a landmark in cinema, but time had taken its toll on the existing prints and the film was rarely seen. The Outfest Legacy Project and UCLA Film & Television Archive restored "Word Is Out" with the generous contribution of the David Bohnett Foundation, creating a high-definition video for this DVD premiere. The release celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first Gay Pride Marches and follows its premiere at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and the theatrical tour around the world earlier this year. Create Your Own Adventure and Run with Ray Zahab

Strap on your running shoes and join Canada's ultra - marathoner and adventure athlete, Ray Zahab, for the 'Jog for the Bog' on September 26th 2010 and Gala dinner on September 24th 2010.

Mr. Zahab has competed in adventure racing challenges all over the world including the grueling 250km Gobi March and Libyan Challenge as well as expeditions to Baffin Island, Tunisia and the South Pole. In 2007, Zahab's love of running brought him to the Sahara Desert. After witnessing and experiencing the water crisis and malaria epidemic in Africa, he decided to dedicate his future to raising awareness and funding for causes that he supports and believes in. Zahab is a member of the board of Directors of the Ryan's Well Foundation He is the official Athletic Ambassador to the ONExONE organization and a representative of SpreadTheNet. In 2008, Ray founded impossible2Possible (i2P), an organization that aims to inspire and educate youth through adventure learning, and inclusion and participation in expeditions. Zahab will be participating in this year's Jog for the Bog, showing his support to conserve and protect Burns Bog, by running the 40km bog race route. All race participants will be able to run with Zahab for the last 10km of the race and a few lucky runners who are able to raise $2,000 in pledges will get the opportunity to run with Zahab for the entire race.

Zahab will also be sharing his inspirational stories and experiences at the Burns Bog Gala, taking place on September 24th 2010 at 7778-152 St. Surrey. Tickets are $75 and include a dinner based on the 100 mile diet, a silent auction and entertainment. All proceeds will go to educational programming at the Society.

Tsawwassen Area Plan Survey Shouldn't Mention Southlands

Every Tsawwassen resident received a survey in the mail last week and people are now trying to figure out what it all means. As some of you know, I am active in the community and cherish what we have here. Here is my two cents worth:

Despite Councilor Bruce McDonald publicly assuring everyone that there would be no survey - as there is no development proposal, despite not being able to mention the Southlands (development) elephant in the room for much of the TAP committee meetings and despite not having a good structured debate on the development, this week we all received a survey to ask our opinion of the development proposal that does not actually exist. What a joke!

Personally, I do not call 'limited development' developing 50% of the land. This is yet another example of trying to skew a survey by the usual pro-development suspects (literally). What happened to asking us if 10% is OK? The question this survey is really asking is:

"Do you want the Century Group to pave the Southlands and build 1,900 homes on the land?"

Our council should not even be asking us this question without a concrete development proposal that has been properly discussed. This survey, if returned in the affirmative could be used as justification to change the OCP, and in subsequent submissions to Metro Vancouver to re-designate the land from 'Green Zone'. Be very careful what power you entrust with this group of councilors.

Why the rush? It is my opinion that they are trying to 'Beat the Buzzer' and get a change to the Official Community Plan prior to adoption of the Metro Vision 2040 plan. For those of you unaware, once Metro adopts its’ new policies the land will be very difficult to re-zone. Interestingly, despite certain public protest otherwise, Council and the planning department were briefed by Metro on their plans - prior to the start of the TAP process.

This travesty has cost Delta enough; it is time for the small town Councilors McDonald and King to put their pet project aside. Please vote for NO DEVELOPMENT.

What are the real reasons behind the hold by Metro Vancouver for Ramsar status?

As I am getting to know more about the history of Burns Bog, and have been an attendee to some events and dialogue with the Corporation of Delta and Metro Vancouver, I would like to know the real reasons behind Mayor Jackson’s decision regarding Ramsar Wetland of International Significance status.

Could it be that she does not want international attention brought to her regarding the poor management by both Corporation of Delta and Metro Vancouver of Burns Bog (or all four levels of government for that matter)? Why has the conservation covenant not been used to stop the South Fraser Perimeter Road from winding its way along the lagg of the bog?

Mayor Lois Jackson, who chairs the board, says that Metro Vancouver's park people are not following the conservation covenant and seems to do what they want without concurring with all parties. Is she not talking about herself? I have a hard time not assuming that if she sits on Metro Vancouver's board as chair and is mayor of Delta, would she not be concurring?

I guess I just have to sit back over a glass of Arrogant Frog wine, help fund Burns Bog Conservation Society as I sip (proceeds of Arrogant Frog sales in June go to the society's education programs) and contemplate what Mayor Jackson wants. If it is a legacy Mayor Jackson would like to leave, she is not going to accomplish it this way.

Wizard of Oz Dance Revue at Genesis Theatre in Ladner

The Deas Island Dance Studio annual revue begins tonight at the Genesis Theatre in Ladner. This year's show is a rendition of the Wizard of Oz. The youth dance troupe features the full gambit of dance styles ranging from classical ballet to popular Hip-Hop choreographs.

In early May, this popular event had parents lined up around the dance studio for their chance to purchase tickets to watch their young stars perform. There are a limited amount of tickets still available for purchase at the door but the two most popular showings, the Friday evening and Sunday Matinee, sold out quickly.

Admission at the door is $16 and the show runs from June 3rd to the 6th.
